Federal Lezgin national-cultural autonomy. Prospects for the development of tourism in the Republic of Dagestan Similar works to - Study of the state and prospects for the development of the tourism market in the Republic of Dagestan

Tourism in Dagestan-one of the most promising areas of the republic’s economy. Potential opportunities allow, with an appropriate level of development of tourism infrastructure, to receive up to 1 million tourists, increase the services of the resort and tourism complex to 6 billion rubles per year and create more than 100 thousand new jobs.

The Republic of Dagestan has rich natural healing and recreational resources, on the basis of which a whole system of sanatoriums and resorts has been created. Dagestan has practically all the conditions for the development of tourism: the sandy shore of the Caspian Sea (salt healing water, fine sand, the swimming season lasts 150 days, 200 days a year are sunny); mountains, for the development of mountain tourism and mountaineering.

Dagestan can attract tourists with its numerous natural, historical and architectural monuments. Natural monuments are such unique places as the Sary-Kum dune (height 250 m, the most unique free-standing dune), Mount Pushkin-Tau (Kayakent district), Karadakh gorge (Gunib district), Sulak canyon, Samur forest, Khuchninsky waterfall, Mount Bazarduzu.

There are many historical and architectural monuments, for example, the Naryn-Kala fortress, Mount Akhulgo (the site of Shamil’s battle), the village of Kubachi, many museums (local history, art museum, etc.).

The most important wealth of Dagestan is the shore of the Caspian Sea, where many sanatoriums, tourist centers, and treatment centers have been built and are about to be built.

In 2016, 11 tourist infrastructure facilities were built and put into operation in the republic through private investment for 338 beds. During the period from 2010 to 2016, 69 hotels, holiday homes and tourist and entertainment centers with 2,821 beds were commissioned and began to operate. The total number of people employed in the tourism industry on a permanent basis is 8.2 thousand people.

Famous sanatoriums in Dagestan are: “Dagestan”, “Kayakent”, “Caspian”, “Golden Sands”, “Chaika”, “Akhty”, “Berikey”, etc. The Chindirchero ski resort in the Akushinsky district is very popular. The creation of almost all sanatoriums was based on mineral springs and healing mud, which are unique in their composition.

The natural and climatic conditions and historical heritage of Dagestan provide unique opportunities for the development of all types of tourism here: beach and water, ski and extreme, ethnic and historical, environmental and health-improving.

The length of the Caspian Sea coastline is 530 kilometers with extensive sandy beaches, warm sea and ionized air. There are already existing recreational areas with beautiful beaches: Makhachkala (80 km), Samursky (42 km), Manassky (48 km), Kayakentsky (40 km).

Currently, 203 collective accommodation facilities operate in the tourism industry of the Republic of Dagestan, incl. - 52 tourist centers with 12,195 beds, 24 sanatoriums with 3,148 beds, 127 hotels with 3,507 beds, 28 guest houses with 250 beds. The total number of beds is -18850 units.

Mountain slopes with snow-capped peaks over 4000 m high, characterized by an abundance of sun, ultraviolet radiation and the absence of winds and fogs. Climbing routes have been laid to the high mountain peaks of Dagestan (for example, the Bazar-dyuzi and Shalbuzdag mountains). Dagestan has the potential to attract lovers of extreme types of tourism - from traditional skiing and mountaineering to young and fashionable mountain biking, kitesurfing, paragliding, rafting, jeeping, and canyoning.

There are more than 6 thousand historical and cultural monuments in Dagestan, of which 173 are of federal significance. The oldest cultural center of Dagestan, Derbent, has preserved unique monuments of history, architecture, and archeology. Here is the Naryn-Kala fortress, recognized by UNESCO as a monument of world significance.

The population of Dagestan is a unique ethnic community. Nowhere in the world are more than 100 nationalities and nationalities living in such a small area. Moreover, each nation has preserved its long-standing traditions, folklore, folk crafts and ethnolinguistic appearance.

In terms of diversity of plant-climatic zones, Dagestan has no equal in Russia: from subtropical forest at the mouth of the Samur River, deserts and semi-deserts in the north of the republic, to high-mountain tundras and glaciers. The flora of Dagestan has about 4,000 plant species, including many endemics and relics. The fauna of Dagestan is rich and diverse, numbering 89 species of mammals, 300 species of birds and 92 species of fish, including sturgeon.

There are few places where there are still such opportunities for the development of sanatorium-resort treatment. There are a large number of geothermal springs here. Many of them, in their power and healing properties, are not inferior to or even superior to the sources of world-famous resorts. For example, the Talgi resort is the only balneotherapy facility in the world resort practice, the basis of which is highly concentrated sulfide waters containing hydrogen sulfide. In terms of hydrogen sulfide content, the Talginsky spring has no equal in Europe. The quality of water makes it possible to treat diseases of the musculoskeletal system, skin, gynecological and neurological diseases.

Often, mountain and sea landscapes are combined in one place; in addition, there is a historical part and a large number of geothermal springs.

The warm climate, diversity and wealth of natural resources, favorable geopolitical location, as well as guaranteed support from the leadership of the republic create the most favorable conditions for the development of tourism and profitable investments.

For several years now, the republican authorities have been making great efforts to transform Dagestan into a modern tourist region; they have managed to focus attention on the need for further development of the only alternative seaside tourism option in the south of Russia on the Dagestan coast of the Caspian Sea, which is not inferior to the Black Sea coast in many respects.

Today we can already talk about the influence of the tourism component on the economy of the republic. The government of the republic defines tourism as a strategic budget-forming sector of the economy.

The republic is taking measures to rationally use the existing resource potential and create conditions for the revival of tourism at a qualitatively new level. The volumes of both inbound and outbound tourist flows have increased.

According to expert estimates, the number of served and healthy tourists in 2016 was about 513 thousand people, which is 20% more than in 2015, more than half of them were visitors. In 2016, travel companies of the republic sent more than 31,400 people on vacation outside the republic (mainly to the countries of the Middle East: Greece, Cyprus, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, European countries and China).

For the further development of the tourist and recreational complex of Dagestan, significant investments are needed in the construction of hotels, roads, communications, and new forms of tourism and recreation must be used. Dagestan has an abundance of mountain raging rivers. The first rafting events in Dagestan took place in 1988, when all-Union competitions were held in the republic. Since then, rafting has become one of the most popular extreme types of tourism in Dagestan.

An independent agency has been created in the republic to deal with the development of the tourism industry - the Ministry of Tourism and Folk Arts of the Republic of Dagestan. The work of the Ministry is aimed at implementing state policy in the field of tourism, creating conditions for the development of tourism infrastructure and attracting investment, positioning Dagestan as a region with high tourism opportunities, preserving and developing folk arts and crafts; on the development of the legislative and regulatory framework in the field of tourism and software issues for the development of the tourism industry.

In order to preserve and develop the sphere of folk artistic crafts, work is being carried out to ensure the participation of enterprises of folk artistic crafts of the Republic of Dagestan in the implementation of the state program of the Russian Federation “Industrial development and increasing competitiveness”. Work is being carried out to assist individual entrepreneurs in preparing projects for participation in the competition for grants, in accordance with the state program of the Republic of Dagestan “Development of small and medium-sized enterprises for 2014-2016”. In 2016, individual entrepreneurs in the field of folk arts and crafts received 19 grants totaling 4030.0 thousand rubles.

As a result of the measures taken, in 2016, the volume of production of folk art crafts in the republic as a whole amounted to 1085.7 million rubles. According to this indicator, Dagestan maintains a leading position among all subjects of the Russian Federation.

Emerging trends, including the positive results of recent years, convince us that the rise of the tourism industry in Dagestan, which began several years ago, is increasingly becoming sustainable and long-term. These and other positive processes are considered the most important condition for attracting investors. The main task today is the creation and development of a new infrastructure of tourism and recreation facilities, the further development of the recreation and health industry. This will make it possible in the future to transform tourism into a highly profitable sector of the Dagestan economy and integrate it into the Russian and world industry.

MAKHACHKALA, April 16 – RIA “Dagestan”. The state and prospects for the development of tourism in Dagestan were discussed today at an operational meeting led by the Head of the region, Vladimir Vasiliev.

Anticipating the discussion, the head of the republic emphasized that the development of tourism, the modernization of our resort fund, and the improvement of the population’s health are “tasks that require a long time and a systematic approach.”

Vasiliev recalled that there are important areas of activity, national interests of Russia as a whole and Dagestan, which need to be looked into the future. “If we do not create a concept for long-term development, others will create it and then values, primarily the best minds, will leave our jurisdiction. We must see ambitious prospects that will unite us. The task of the authorities is to find some solutions in this direction every day,” the Head of Dagestan emphasized.

Vladimir Vasiliev pointed out the possibility of using existing infrastructure, especially in the off-season, as one of the ways to develop tourism. At the same time, he added that Dagestan has enormous potential that does not require capital investment, and called for its use.

In this regard, he said that a group of State Duma staff members, as well as a small delegation from Tver, had recently visited the republic, and they all shared enthusiastic reviews of Dagestan, which once again indicates interest in the region.

“We need to create modern, highly efficient resort spaces that meet the needs of not only our residents, but also the highest demands of Russians. I’m sure we can organize regular visits to the republic by Russians in the off-season and load our hotel business and service sector,” said the head of the republic.

At the same time, he focused the attention of the meeting participants on the importance of bringing the economy out of the “shadow”: “We have now moved on to a systematic solution to this problem. Many thanks to everyone who is involved in this. This year, non-cash payments in the trade sector have almost doubled compared to last year. Here are concrete facts that help solve big problems. We must open the doors to the space of law."

He recalled that “tourism is the hospitality industry.” “I have only been a Dagestani for less than two years, but once here, I was convinced that Dagestan is a territory of hospitality. The best experiences need to be brought here,” Vasiliev further stated.

According to the head of the republic, when developing tourism, special attention should be paid to such modern trends as tent architecture, modular and container construction.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism of Dagestan, Rasul Ibragimov, reported in detail on the ongoing work to develop tourism, including the creation of tourism infrastructure.

He said that in Dagestan the internal and incoming tourist flow is growing annually, and in 2018 it amounted to 685 thousand people. In this regard, the issue of the state of tourist infrastructure, the sanitary condition of facilities, and the transport component is acute.

“I see the solution to these issues in close cooperation with municipalities. First of all, this applies to the most popular objects among tourists. Among them are the Sulak Canyon, the city of Derbent, the Sary-Kum dune, Kala-Koreish and so on. There are 242 collective accommodation facilities in the republic: 52 tourist centers, 25 sanatorium institutions, 125 hotels, 40 guest houses. Last year, due to private investment, 6 hotels were put into operation, 10 hotels were classified,” the head of the department noted.

He also recalled that changes have been made to federal legislation, and therefore it is necessary to classify accommodation facilities.

Vladimir Vasiliev, commenting on the minister’s speech, drew attention to some points that should be emphasized: “First, we need to ensure security. And then we will follow the path of “whitewashing” this area, consistently increasing the potential of our tourism complex and increasing the well-being of the residents of our republic. We will create such conditions so that already this year direct investments from tourist flows will come to residents of remote areas who live near these tourist spots. They should feel the benefits for their families from the influx of tourists.”

During the meeting, Rasul Ibragimov reported that the ministry was carrying out a set of measures to bring the activities of tourism enterprises in the republic into the legal framework. Thus, at the moment, out of 44 travel agencies in the republic, 5 are registered in the unified federal register.

He said that today there are 12 tourist routes in the region, which are most popular among guests and residents of the republic, and more than 150 events are planned.

Linking the tourism sector with other industries, the Head of Dagestan pointed out the need to restore order in terms of transportation. In this regard, he stated that the driver must undergo a medical examination, and buses must undergo technical maintenance.

Rasul Ibragimov also noted that the design of block containers with accompanying infrastructure has been developed, an investor has been attracted, who has already entered into contracts for the production of block containers with a company from St. Petersburg.

Vladimir Vasiliev called for taking into account the interests of local residents when implementing this idea. In this regard, he called for the possibility of organizing retail outlets in these zones, where local residents can sell the agricultural products they grow: “We must provide maximum freedom, but control. This is a special regime specifically for residents of these territories.” Attention will also be paid to the development of rural tourism and expansion of the network of guest houses in the Moscow Region, especially in mountainous Dagestan. The register of guest houses includes 40 properties in 22 municipalities. In this regard, the head of the republic proposed to support the owners of guest houses by exempting them from taxation. Let home tourism in our republic be free for those who organize such establishments.

In order to ensure uniform designation of tourist infrastructure facilities, a project to install tourist navigation road signs is also being implemented.

In terms of preserving and developing folk arts and crafts, we plan to support production in the village. Kubachi Dakhadaevsky district.

According to him, the development of tourism for the region has recently become a top priority. In this regard, three investment sites have been formed. The first is the Sulak Canyon. Back in 2014, a central platform was built for it and transferred to the balance of the Ministry of Tourism. Given the large influx of tourists, the municipality is carrying out “work to maintain a satisfactory sanitary condition” of the territory.

In addition, Musaev said, work is underway to delimit three land plots of different sizes for subsequent transfer from the category of agricultural land. “This is necessary so that we can provide them to potential investors,” explained the head of the district.

He further said that in the area of the Sulak Canyon there is the village of Old Zubutli, which was not formed as an administrative unit. This work also needs to be completed, especially since there is a corresponding instruction from the President of Russia. “If there is an administrative unit there, it will be easier to use funds, including from the district budget, to develop tourism there,” added Gadzhimurad Musaev.

The second tourist route is the area opposite the Sulak Canyon, from where, according to the head of the municipality, the view is even better, and a beautiful forest is also visible. The construction of an observation deck has already begun here, the construction of a public catering facility is underway, and the access road is being repaired.

The third facility is located in the village of Almak. “According to the federal target program, this village is included in the health complex. We have already created a site for this facility with an area of 25 hectares. There, in the village, there is a reindeer farm, where more than 1.5 thousand sika deer are kept. This year we began the construction of public catering facilities, guest houses, and we are creating hotel rooms,” said the head of the district.

Speaking about tourist signs, Gadzhimurad Musaev reported that, on behalf of the Chairman of the Government of Dagestan, 16 of them have already been installed, and if necessary, the number will be increased. Currently, materials have been sent to the relevant departments so that the information is also displayed through Yandex navigation.

The head of the district agreed with the words of Vladimir Vasiliev that not everywhere the population will support the initiative to develop tourism. On the ground, he emphasized, there are such trends, so this issue should be approached taking into account the opinions of local residents.

Musaev specifically focused on the situation when citizens made attempts to seize lands located in close proximity to a tourist site. “If we allowed this, a kind of Shanghai would be formed. In this regard, we are talking with both residents and administrations. We are working to prevent squatting. Therefore, it would be more correct to quickly transfer the land from the agricultural category and provide it to a potential investor,” the head of the district noted.

Vladimir Vasiliev asked the head of the municipality what work is being done to prevent unsanitary conditions at tourist sites. Musaev reported that regional operators have been identified in the area who will closely deal with these issues.

The head of Dagestan also asked about the number of hotels and registered tour operators in the Kazbekovsky district. To which the answer was received that there are no registered tour operators yet, some work is being carried out in this direction. As for hotels, there is only one in the area - in the village of Dubki, which is on the balance sheet of the Ministry of Tourism.

The issue of transport transportation was raised separately. According to Vasiliev, this is an extremely important issue, since tourists should receive high-quality services in terms of transportation. The head of the district reported that currently on the territory of the municipality about 300 people are engaged in private transportation. It was noted that work remains to be done to bring them out, including from the “shadow”.

In this regard, Vladimir Vasiliev emphasized that the leadership of Dagestan is ready to help in every possible way in solving a number of problems, but no one will go to them to deal with private cab drivers who violate the established procedure for transporting people; this should be done by local leaders.

He asked everyone who deals with these issues, including those who control them, to look into it, since any accident on the tourist route is a blow to the entire work.

“When you bring up an issue, always look at it from a safety perspective. It won’t be safe here - people won’t come to us!” Vasiliev said, addressing the private participants of the meeting.

The head of the republic further emphasized that tourism in Dagestan is developing primarily for its residents. “This is a very important point. I would like the Dagestanis to be able to use what we have and to show it to others. And there is something to show!”

She said that on the basis of the RGUTiS branch it was possible to combine all levels of education into one continuous system, involving regional employers in the educational process, including studying and providing them with support in matters of classification.

According to her, now they are faced with an important task - to complete the classification of all objects of the tourism industry by January 1, 2020.

“An analysis of the supply of personnel to the tourism industry of the republic showed that some of the main personnel do not have the qualifications required by the relevant current standards. And here, first of all, is the question of the Dagestan mentality.

If we pay attention to the monitoring of the effectiveness of educational institutions for 2018, we will see that in Dagestan the increased number of students in the service sector is 0.55%, that is, not even one percent. And the annual monitoring of the demand for the profession among potential applicants showed that only 2% of them are ready to study in the service sector,” noted Khanbabaeva.

As an alternative, she proposed the active implementation of a program of additional professional education: “We are ready to train in a shorter time the personnel who are involved in our tourism industry.”

Vladimir Vasiliev, for his part, emphasized that it is necessary not only to “teach”, but also to “retrain” people. “We invite guests to our place. Now imagine that they will come to us, as the head of the district said here in Shanghai. These are serious things... Who will meet the tourists? “Who is the master of the house?” asked the head of the republic.

As part of the discussion, it was said that more than half of Dagestan students who received higher education in the field of tourism industry and management simply leave the republic for other countries, where they pay many times more, while the republic experiences a shortage of personnel.

It was also noted that the shortage of service personnel is of particular concern. Since the industry in the region operates mainly from May to September, during the off-season, workers are left without work and livelihood. They also talked about low wages in the service sector, including the tourism industry. All this ultimately leads to the fact that people do not want to work in this industry.

The head of Dagestan instructed all responsible departments to study this issue and make proposals. In addition, he drew attention to the need to attract volunteers and students.

    Region information

Capital: the city of Makhachkala, founded in 1844.

    Geographical position

The Republic of Dagestan is the southernmost region of the Russian Federation, occupies a favorable geostrategic position and has direct access to international sea routes. The republic borders by land and sea with five countries - Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. Within the administrative boundaries of the Russian Federation it neighbors Kalmykia, the Stavropol Territory and the Chechen Republic. The total length of the territory from south to north is about 400 km, from west to east - 200 km.

The area of Dagestan is 50,270 km, the population is 3.016 million people (2016). In terms of territory and population, Dagestan is the largest republic in the North Caucasus.

    Climatic features

The climatic zones of Dagestan are presented from subtropical forest at the mouth of the Samur River to deserts and semi-deserts in the north of the republic and to high-mountain glaciers in Mountainous Dagestan. In general, Dagestan has a temperate continental, arid climate. In the mountainous part it changes with altitude: temperature drops and humidity rises. In the southern, coastal part - transitional from temperate to subtropical. Average air temperature: in January - from +1C in the lowlands to -11C in the mountains, the average temperature in July is up to +24C. The water in the Caspian Sea warms up to an average of 24-26C in summer, and up to 35C in shallow waters.

    Tourist opportunities

The landscape of Dagestan is unique and original: a 245-kilometer strip of foothills abuts transverse ridges that border Inner Dagestan in a huge arc. However, Dagestan is not only the mountains of the eastern part of the North Caucasus, but also the adjacent plains of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world, called the sea for its large size. The Caspian Sea contains up to 90% of the water of all the salt lakes in the world. The Caspian coastline in the Republic of Dagestan has a length of 530 km.

The Caspian Sea is the country's most important fishing basin, whose biological resources include the world's reserves of rare and valuable sturgeon fish. 70% of the world's sturgeon stock is concentrated here, more than 60% of large parts.

The natural environment of the Caspian Sea, with its warm climate and magnificent sandy beaches, has in recent years become a popular holiday destination for tens of thousands of tourists from all over Russia and abroad. In the summer season, almost all recreation centers on the coast are 100% full. Existing tourist centers, sanatoriums and hotels are being modernized at a rapid pace and new ones are being built.

Among the unique corners of Dagestan, a special place is occupied by the delta of the Samur River in the south of the republic, with the lower reaches of the Gulgerichay River adjacent to it from the north. Thanks to favorable climatic and hydrological conditions, the Samur delta is distinguished by the richness and originality of its soil and vegetation cover. This is the only subtropical liana forest in Russia. Almost 2 thousand hectares of forest in the Samur delta are the Samur State Nature Reserve of federal significance.

Mount Shalbuzdag, one of the highest peaks in the southeastern part of the Main Caucasus Range, rises to a height of 4150 m above sea level. Shalbuzdag is considered a sacred mountain of Muslims and is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims from all over Russia and abroad. Mount Shalbuzdag stands alone, rising like a solitary pyramid topped by a jagged peak. Thanks to this location, Shalbuzdag gives the impression of being the highest peak in this part of Dagestan, although the neighboring peaks Bazarduzu and Shahdag are actually higher. The almost regular cone-shaped peak of Shalbuzdag resembles a volcano in its outline. From the tops of the mountain a panorama of the eastern part of the Main Caucasus Range opens. In clear weather, the ice caps of Bazarduzu, Shahdag, Bogos massif, Dyultydag and other peaks are visible. Below, in the valley of the Samur River, there are numerous villages surrounded by green gardens, and far in the east a strip of the blue Caspian Sea is visible.

Mount Yarydag (3925 m) , translated as “Red Mountain”, is located in the Dokuzparinsky district of the Republic of Dagestan, near the border with Azerbaijan, near the highest mountain settlement in Europe - the village of Kurush. Yarydag is a huge rock mass with a steep wall along the perimeter, and is an ideal place for lovers of extreme sports and tourism. This is one of the most popular places in Russia for organizing competitions of various levels in mountaineering and extreme disciplines.

In the Tabasaran district, near the regional center of the village. Khuchni - there is the famous Khuchninsky waterfall, its second name is Hagansky waterfall. A steep descent stretches for almost 30 meters, forming a high waterfall and a small lake where everyone can swim. The lake is surrounded by grassy lawns, ideal for sunbathing. A walk through the forest can be combined with collecting nuts, rose hips, dogwood and others. Not far from the waterfall is the legendary fortress of the “Seven Brothers and Sisters,” built in the 17th century. This fortress played a special role in the struggle for freedom from foreign invaders.

On the southern slope of one of the spurs of the Karasyrt ridge, separating mountainous Dagestan from foothills in the upper reaches of the Korchagsu River, the “Aeolian City” is located. On an area of almost 3 sq km, on a relatively flat area, overgrown with dense, impenetrable bushes and trees, there rise original-shaped remains in the form of towers, pillars, arches of various types, and stone mushrooms of various shapes. Bizarre landforms are the result of the work of water and wind. Therefore, the remains are called aeolian (after the name of Aeolus, the god of the winds of ancient Greek mythology).

In the central part of mountainous Dagestan there is the Gunib Plateau, which has the shape of a huge truncated cone with a depression from the north-west to the south-east. The height of the plateau in various places is from 1700 to 2352 m above sea level. On the plateau you can find birch groves, bright carpets of alpine meadows, waterfalls, mysterious caves, and many historical monuments from the time of the Caucasian War of the 19th century. The plateau area is a mountainous resort area characterized by an abundance of sun and the absence of winds and fogs.

Among the unique natural monuments of Dagestan, the Karadakh Gorge, which is called the “Gateway of Miracles,” stands out. The gorge is located between the Gunib and Khunzakh regions. The total length of the gorge is about 400 m, the maximum height reaches 160-170 m, with a width of no more than 2-4 m. The walls of the gorge are so smoothed by water that sometimes they seem polished.

A wonderful and majestic creation of nature in Dagestan is the Sulak Canyon. The canyon originates in the place where the Sulak River, rushing north, cuts through the mountains and separates Salatau from the Gimry Range. She cut through layers of limestone and sandstone over a distance of 53 km. The canyon is striking in its grandeur and resembles the famous Colorado River Canyon in North America, but in depth (1920 m) the Sulak Canyon is significantly superior to the Colorado Canyon and consists of three separate canyons. The largest, 18 km long, called the main canyon, is larger in size than the following Chirkey and Miatlin canyons. The slopes of the main canyon are crossed in places by hanging beams. The greatest depth of this part of the canyon reaches 1900 m with a width of 3.5 km, and below, near the reservoir itself - from 20 to 45 m. Almost inaccessible slopes form in places rocky cliffs with a height of 200 to 800 meters.

One One of the most accessible attractions of mountainous Dagestan is a waterfallTobot. The road from Makhachkala to the village of Khunzakh takes about three hours by car. The waterfall is located 500 meters from the Khunzakh fortress, near the villages. Arani. Travelers are treated to an unforgettable view: the flat plateau suddenly breaks off, and streams of water fall with a roar from the top of the gorge, flying past picturesque rocks. The height of the waterfall is about 70 meters. Below, water crystals rise from the bottom of the canyon and, illuminated by the sun, play with all possible colors of the rainbow, creating an incredibly beautiful picture. Further, Tobot expands forming a series of rapids.

In the Kumtorkala region of the republic, it is worth visiting the largest sand dune in Europe, “Sary-Kum,” which reaches a height of 262 meters. The huge masses of sand that make up Sary-Kum are products of weathering of sandstones from the surrounding mountains and deposits of ancient Caspian terraces. The unique sand formation arose due to a special wind regime, terrain and a number of other natural factors.

There are dozens of different caves in mountainous Dagestan. Of significant interest are the Karabudakhkent caves, located on the left bank of the Manasozen River, on the slopes of the dome-shaped Eldamo rise. There are three large caves here. The largest of them is about 125 m long and consists of eight halls (grottoes) connected to each other by narrow passages. The second extends almost 100 m, the third is much smaller, with multi-colored stalactites of bizarre shape hanging from the ceiling. The Durk cave, located on the northeastern outskirts of the village of Khustil, Tabasaran region, is also widely known in Dagestan. It is located on the steep slope of a small mountain spur, almost 400 meters above the river valley and consists of two halls located one above the other.

In terms of the number and significance of cultural heritage sites, Dagestan occupies a special place in the Russian Federation. There are more than 6.5 thousand historical, cultural, and architectural monuments in the republic, including 1,935 objects of federal significance. One of the main calling cards of Dagestan is the oldest city in Russia - Derbent. The history of this amazing city goes back more than 2000 years.

The historical and cultural monuments of Derbent, in their monumentality, amazing grandeur, engineering, fortification and architectural and artistic qualities, are an outstanding example of world construction technology and defense architecture. Particularly impressive are the Naryn-Kala citadel (VII-VIII centuries), the oldest Juma Mosque in Russia (VIII century), the Kirkhlyar memorial cemetery (VII century), ancient quarters, city necropolises and mausoleums, and unique epigraphic monuments. To the west of the Naryn-Kala citadel, a man-made stone wall stretches 40 km, designed to prevent bypassing the fortress along mountain valleys and passes.

In 2003, the historical center of the city of Derbent - the architectural and landscape ensemble "Ancient Derbent", which includes a fortress with a citadel and many religious and civil buildings, whose age ranges from 1000 to 5000 years, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

History buffs should also visit Kalakoreish - an ancient fortress settlement 400 meters long and 200 meters wide, located on a mountain peak at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level near the village of Urkarakh, Dakhadaevsky district. Only a small bridge, 50 meters long and 5 meters wide, connects the settlement with the outside world. According to legend, the fortress was founded in the 7th century. the Arab tribe of Quraysh, from which the family of the Prophet Muhammad descends and is considered one of the outposts of the spread of Islam in the North Caucasus. In the fortress there is a sarcophagus - a stone semi-cylindrical tombstone of the 13th - early 14th centuries with various visual subjects: relief images of lions carved in profile, standing on the sides of a heraldic interpreted eagle with symmetrically outstretched wings. This is one of the outstanding monuments of medieval Islamic art in Dagestan.

At a distance of 4 km from the village of Khuchni, the administrative center of the Tabasaran region, on a hill, the remains of an ancient fortress (XVII century) known as the “Fortress of the Seven Brothers and Sisters” have been preserved. The fortress is located on a mountain ledge, right next to the gorge, and is located in such a way that it controls the routes to Upper Tabasaran and is strategically connected to the final section of the Derbent defensive complex. There are many defensive structures, towers, etc. in the mountains, but the fortress “Fortress of the Seven Brothers and Sisters” compares favorably with them in that, unlike other structures built from huge, untreated blocks, almost without the use of cement or lime mortar, the masonry The walls of the Khuchninsky fortress were made using a binder mortar in regular rows.

16 km south of the regional center of the Dakhadaevsky district, village. Urkarah and 1 km southwest of the abandoned village. Sanzhi, you can see the Sanzhinsky rock carvings - a monument to the ancient art of the peoples of Dagestan. The images date back to the 4th – 1st millennium BC. Among the subjects of ancient rock paintings are horsemen, people, bezoar goats, deer, horses, dogs, solar symbols, dot and quadrangular signs. Some images form compositions, for example, a scene of horsemen hunting goats, deer, etc. The images are painted on the surface of the rock using mineral paint - ocher in red, orange and yellowish tones, the outputs of which are located right there in the rocks. The study of these images allowed scientists to create reconstructions of the religious ideas and rituals of the peoples of Dagestan during the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.

Endless raids and wars forced the inhabitants of Nagorno-Dagestan to build combat and watchtowers. It was in Dagestan that tower architecture reached its highest development. This was especially evident in the architectonics of battle towers, which are the pinnacle of medieval architecture. Battle towers were built in compliance with mirror symmetry and proportionality of all parts of the building, in amazing harmony with the surrounding landscape. The towers were erected in such a way that it was possible to control all key passes, roads and mountain paths.

The oldest surviving towers are the battle tower (XVII century) in the village of Itsari (Dakhadayevsky district) and the watchtower (XVIII century) in the village of Koroda (Gunibsky district). Tower in the village Itsari is the largest surviving round tower in the North Caucasus. It is a cone-shaped stone structure tapering upward. The tower served both as a signal and watchtower. Several signal towers also rise above the pass in the rocky spur of Bogos near the villages of Khushtada and Tindinaga (Tsumadinsky district).

The high-mountain village of goldsmiths Kubachi (Dakhadayevsky district) is perhaps the only place in the North Caucasus and Russia where they possess unique ancient technologies that allow processing precious metals at a highly artistic level. Thanks to the art of making jewelry, weapons and utensils, local craftsmen have become famous throughout the world. Unique works of art by Kubachi are part of the collection of the largest Russian and foreign museums.

In the village Untsukul (Untsukul district) there is a unique, one-of-a-kind type of decorative and applied art that combines wood carving and jewelry art - “Untsukul metal incision on wood.” The art is relatively young - it appeared in the first half of the 19th century during the Caucasian War. From the reeds growing along the banks of the Avar Koisu, the Untsukul people began to make whips for leggings, and from dogwood - pipes and canes. Like the Kubachi people, Untsukul craftsmen made traditional household items: flour measures, garlic mortars, salt shakers, ladles, supplies, boxes. Some exhibits are true masterpieces of applied art and are presented in many Russian and foreign museums.

Dagestan carpets enjoy well-deserved fame. The presence of high-quality wool and natural dyes contributed to the development of carpet weaving in southern Dagestan. Felt and pile carpets, rugs, burkas, socks, and shoulder bags were made by women in many villages of Dagestan. Dagestan carpets are distinguished by their unique patterns, the predominance of blue and red colors, and the height of their pile. The most skillful products are considered to be the products of craftswomen from the Derbent, Akhtyn, Tabasaran, Khiva and Rutul regions of Dagestan. Already in the Middle Ages, carpets were sold outside of Dagestan. In many villages of Southern Dagestan there is a “carpet workshop” in almost every house.
